Hydraulic cylinder repair: safety and performance

Repairing a hydraulic cylinder matters. Here is a quick look at why it pays to look after this equipment.

Hydraulic cylinders being repaired for a customer

Hydraulic cylinders are essential, heavily loaded components in many sectors such as civil engineering, industry and agriculture. Exposed to heavy loads and repetitive movements over long periods, they play a crucial role in how machines work and in the safety of the people using them.

Proper maintenance and regular repairs are therefore vital for equipment life, operator safety and the overall efficiency of operations.

If you are looking to replace your cylinder, Hydromag offers a complete range of hydraulic cylinders, which you can also configure yourself with our online configurator.

Common types of failure

Typical signs of a problem with a hydraulic cylinder include:

  • Hydraulic fluid leaks: oil stains under the cylinder mean a leak, which must be fixed before it causes more serious damage.
  • Slow or limited movement: a pressure problem or worn seals can slow the cylinder down. This is known as an internal leak.
  • Unusual noises: squeaking or rubbing can point to worn seals, damaged parts or insufficient lubrication.
  • Damaged rod: often caused by misuse or excessive load. It must be repaired immediately to protect the machine, avoid further costs and keep the operator safe.

Our repair process

Each cylinder is carefully dismantled and assessed in our dedicated workshop. It is marked for full traceability, tested on a test bench, and documented in a detailed report of the work carried out.

  1. 1

    Barrel assessment

Inspection of the barrel's general condition, honing if needed, or replacement.

  2. 2

    Seals

    Replacement of the seal kits.

  3. 3

    Mechanical parts

Inspection of the cylinder's mechanical parts.

  4. 4

    Rod and chrome

Check of the rod and its chrome plating, machining of mechanical parts if needed.

  5. 5

    Mountings

Check of the cylinder's mounting systems.

  6. 6

    Proof test

Testing of the cylinder on a hydraulic test bench.
